The Gotthard Base tunnel near Erstfeld is the world's longest rail tunnel. Crossing the Alps, the world's longest train tunnel should become operational at the end of 2016. The train, which is 481 meters (1578 ft) long and weighs 787 tons, is constructed to produce concrete for the installation of the railway tracks in the tunnel.
The project consists of two parallel single track tunnels, each of a length of 57 km.
Scheduled to open in 2016, the main purpose of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight.

A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zürich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1 hour 40 minutes.
